Network Issues
This is a new section that I added under the operating systems. It seems that people have a lot of problem setting up their networks. So I will spend  extra time on this section.

What is a network?

A network is a group of two or more computers connected to each other by a cable, over telephone lines, or through wireless communication. When you are connected to a network, you can share resources on your computer, such as documents, programs, printers, and modems, and use resources that other people have shared.

If you are not using a Network, you have a stand alone computer. In order for you to connect to the outside word, you would using some kind of Modem or Network card.

Modem Setup

If you are having problems connect to your ISP or Network, the first thing you want to check is the communication device. For a lot of you this would be the modem. In order to change the modem setting we have to go to the Control Panel. Here is what you need to do.:

Start Settings Control Panel

You will see an icon for Modems.Go ahead and double click on it. You will get a new dialog box

If you want to perform diagnostics on your modem do the following, click the Diagnostics tap show below
Under Diagnostics you will see

If the diagnostics do not solve your problem, you may have to install a new modem. When you click Add, you will see a new window that looks like this

If you know which type of modem is on your computer, check Don't detect my modem and click Next.

Select the modem from the list and click Next to install the modem on your computer. You will get another window telling you about the modem you just picked. It will also ask you which port you want to use. Select the appropriate port and click Next.

Finally it will give you a message like the modem was installed properly.

Network Setting for your Adapter and Protocol

In order to setup  the Network properties, do the following

Start Settings Control Panel

You will see an icon that says Network. Go ahead and double click on it. You will get a new dialog box that looks  like this

If you are using a modem to connect to the internet, you need to have three things present on your Network properties if using Windows operating system

   Client for Microsoft Networks
   Dial-up Adapter
   TCP/IP

Lets set up one of these at a time now

Client for Microsoft Networks

Click Add on the Network window. You will get a new window like this one

Go ahead and click Add. You will get a new window. In this one select Microsoft and then choose Client for Microsoft Networks from the right window.

Click OK to select

Dial-up Adapter

Next thing we need is the Dial-up Adapter. Go back to the main network window and click Add.  You will get a new window that looks like this

Select Adapter and click Add. You will get yet another window that will let you select the Dial-up Adapter.

Go ahead and select OK.

You need one more thing still. That is the Protocol namely TCP/IP. This protocol lets you surf the net and is needed in your network settings. Go back to the Network window and click Add. You will get a new window that looks something like this.

Select Protocol and click Add. You will get a new window that looks like

Select Microsoft and select TCP/IP from the right window.
Click OK for the last time.

You have added all the necessary network components needed for internet access. You will get a message like this one. Go ahead and restart your computer for the new settings to take place.

This concludes this portion of network issues
